Resilience Coaching

As global health practitioners, we by definition work in difficult, resource-denied places and with populations with complicated needs. We experience first-hand the effects of structural oppression and the impact this has on patient populations and communities that we care deeply about. Our profession puts us in a position to witness suffering, death, and the effects of unfair systems.

This day-to-day witnessing also makes us vulnerable ourselves: to overwork, to burnout, to losing sight of our purpose in the face of these realities. HEAL hopes to create a community where we can feel supported, support others, and – most importantly – support ourselves to ensure we can stay healthy and whole in our everyday work.

HEAL Initiative has partnered with Circles International to offer private resilience coaching sessions to support HEAL fellows in their leadership and service for health equity and social justice. Our aim is to create reflective learning opportunities as well as offer personalized one-on-one support. As you make an effort to develop deeper self-awareness, resilience, and wise leadership, this offering is here to stretch and support you.

They are trained in a combination of coaching, chaplaincy, and social work practices, in order to offer compassionate listening and reflection practices that support fellows in tapping into their own wisdom and agency as they navigate the personal and professional experiences of the HEAL fellowship. These coaches are trained to accompany people in processes that focus on discovering and empowering the inner wisdom and resources of each client.

What is “Resilience Coaching”?

Resilience coaching is a branch of leadership coaching that supports leaders in service-oriented roles to prevent burnout and sustain long-term impact. Our aim is to create a confidential, reflective space through personalized one-on-one support. As you make an effort to develop deeper self-awareness, resilience, and wise leadership, we are here to stretch and support you.

Your resilience coaching involves personalized, confidential sessions by phone or video chat with a trained Circles International coach. Your session is customized to fit your needs, often times with a specific goal or purpose in mind. Those goals may include professional development, leadership development, personal and professional challenges, wellbeing and resilience, amongst other topics that arise for you.

Why might you want Resilience Coaching?

Rates of burnout, stress, and emotional strain are statistically higher for those who work in social justice. We believe it is essential for leaders in health equity and social justice to have trusted, culturally competent, neutral, skilled, and confidential supports in place. You may decide to seek out resilience coaching when you want to:

  • Talk through personal or professional challenges

  • Navigate your role and organization, and how to achieve impact in your current environment

  • Think through relationships with others in your life, professional or personal

  • Discuss values, commitments, and sense of purpose

  • Explore your relationship to privilege, power, and justice

  • Talk about beliefs and explore meaning related to your experiences

  • Process personal or professional grief, loss, or change

  • Process personal or professional successes, learnings, and insights

  • Apply content from the fellowship trainings to your current work and life

  • Reduce stress, achieve better work/life balance, and build time for self-care practices

  • Seek inspiration and attune to intuition

  • Consider important or difficult decisions

  • Ask questions related to your strengths and interests, next steps, or life’s direction

Confidentiality and Mental Health Care

Given the subject matter, resilience coaching can often feel more “therapeutic” than other forms of coaching. It is important to note that our coaches do not provide mental health care services. However, we can provide a confidential space for you to share and consider next steps in seeking appropriate care should mental health concerns arise.

We practice confidentiality with all of our clients and take our responsibility to confidentiality seriously. While a member of the Circles International team is in a personal relationship with a HEAL Initiative employee, we will maintain confidentiality of all sessions, unless you pose an immediate threat to yourself and/or someone else, in which case we will be obligated to contact someone, and will discuss with you prior to contacting another individual. We are always available to answer any questions related to mental health and confidentiality.
